Are you a talented writer? Are you a talented artist? I've come to find that writing, painting, photography... These are not talents. You can't say "I'm a talented writer". These arts, they are skills. It takes skill to accomplish anything worthwhile. Sure, you can be predisposition to become good at something. But to actually be good at something, you have to develop it. I've been writing since I was a little kid. So was I always a talented writer? Maybe for my age, but not in general. My poetry about trees and flowers and sunshine were nothing compared to War and Peace.
You have to develop a piece of writing. You have to develop writing in general. It's like photography. Many people think that the art of photography is being compromised because of digital cameras and the ease of taking a pleasing photograph. But the art is still found...in the development of the photograph. Whether it is good art or bad comes into play later on, but after a photograph has been toiled over...it becomes more than just a point, shoot, print. It becomes something more abstract.
Same with writing. Maybe I'm not good now, but I could be, if I tried.
My effort: Receiving Dictionary.com Word of the Day emails.
Let's see if it works.
